Lake Forest Park House

Lake Forest Park, WA

2,300sf residence

This bold, contemporary residence locates the main living space on the second floor in order to provide stunning views to Lake Washington, the Cascade Mountain Range, and Mount Rainier. Yet, to avoid having the front entrance on the lower level, a footbridge connects to the raised street, turning this project into a sort of humble, modern ‘castle.’

The open, airy interior creates a ‘yin’ to the ‘yang’ of the exterior, as the spacious white volume inside contrasts with the striking black forms outside. Highlights of natural wood & industrial-grade steel become the ‘though line,’ or visual theme connecting the interior & exterior’s white & black palettes.

The view-end of the house opens to a generous deck for outdoor living, and yet it avoids blocking the views from the living room. The overall volume soars to a crescendo of height & daylight with a subtly vaulted ceiling for the main spaces, which hover over the surrounding neighborhood and distant landscape.

The lower level contains three bedrooms, an office, two bathrooms, along with the laundry, utilities & storage.
